BASICS OF COLOUR THEORY
Colour theory explains how colors work together and affect emotions. It includes the colour wheel, colour combinations, and how colours influence mood. Artists and designers use it to create visually appealing work.
SOME IMPORTANT TERMS:
- Hue- The colour itself.
- Saturation- The intensity of the colour.
- Warm colours- (Red, Orange, Yellow) feel energetic and happy.
- Cool colours- (Blue, Green, Purple) feel calm and relaxing.
- Lightness (Tint/Shade/Tone)- How bright or dark the colour is.
o
Tint- Adding white (makes colours lighter, like
pastel shades)
o
Shade- Adding black (makes colours darker, like
deep red or navy blue)
o Tone- Adding grey (makes colours less bright and more muted)
This monochromatic colour scheme uses different shades
and intensities of the same hue.
This is an analogous colour scheme, with colours that sit
next to each other, creating a calming and harmonious look.
These are complementary colours, those that sit opposite each
other on the colour wheel.
Three colors evenly spaced on the wheel give a vibrant,
balanced look. This is called a triadic colour scheme.
To sum up colour groups:
COLOUR MEANING:Red- Passion, Danger
Orange- Energy, creativity
Yellow- Happiness, activeness
Black- Death, Power
Green- Nature, Health
Blue- Calm, wisdom
Purple- Wealth, ambition
White- Purity, Peace
